ACC = A10 of Football, Except Worse

Filed under: Uncategorized — jritch @ 7:11 pm

This past weekend the ACC was embarrassed in football on multiple levels. VT lost to ECU, Maryland almost lost to D1AA Delaware, NCSU is horrible, UNCCH got lucky on a few punt returns in order to beat D1AA McNeese St., Clemson was obliterated by Alabama, Wake is ranked but only beat Baylor. Basically its pathetic all around.

The ACC gets worse at football every year. It's like how the A10 is always the mole to the Big East's mallet. Except it is worse because the ACC gets an automatic BCS bid. Essentially every team in the SEC could win the ACC right now. Yes, I will stand by that statement.

Yet it is truly beautiful. After watching the VT v ECU game here in Charlotte with Jason Feltis, I realized that this was a golden age for UNC Charlotte to start a football team. The biggest thing in NC college football is the 3 time D1AA team that lost to LSU by about 40 points. In other words, not much to get excited about unless you love Boone, and most of the people that live there don't even fall into that category.

With football failing across the area, the quality high school students will love the new approach the Charlotte 49ers can bring to the game. Just another reason to attend the March to the Gridiron on Sept. 16th to show UNC Charlotte Chancellor Phil Dubois that we want football! I won't be there because I'll be in Austria but I will definately be following it closely as I drum up 49er football support in Europe!

Representin' by you.

Les dérapages de l’ami Fernando…

Filed under: Uncategorized — JF @ 11:27 am

Filed under: Uncategorized — sitedit @ 12:37 pm

SERVICE-THE OPENING GUN OF TENNIS.

Filed under: Uncategorized — stanleysails @ 12:31 pm

Service is the opening gun of tennis. It is putting the ball in play. The old idea was that service should never be more than merely the beginning of a rally. With the rise of American tennis and the advent of Dwight Davis and Holcombe Ward, service took on a new significance. These two men originated what is now known as the American Twist delivery.

From a mere formality, service became a point winner. Slowly it gained in importance, until Maurice E. M'Loughlin, the wonderful "California Comet," burst across the tennis sky with the first of those terrific cannon-ball deliveries that revolutionized the game, and caused the old-school players to send out hurry calls for a severe footfault rule or some way of stopping the threatened destruction of all ground strokes. M'Loughlin made service a great factor in the game. It remained for R. N. Williams to supply the antidote that has again put service in the normal position of mere importance, not omnipotence. Williams stood in on the delivery and took it on the rising bound.

Service must be speedy. Yet speed is not the be-all and end-all. Service must be accurate, reliable, and varied. It must be used with discretion and served with brains.

Any tall player has an advantage over a short one, in service. Given a man about 6 feet and allow him the 3 feet added by his reach, it has been proved by tests that should he deliver a service, perfectly flat, with no variation caused by twist or wind, that just cleared the net at its lowest point (3 feet in the centre), there is only a margin of 8 inches of the service court in which the ball can possibly fall; the remainder is below the net angle. Thus it is easy to see how important it is to use some form of twist to bring the ball into court. Not only must it go into court, but it must be sufficiently speedy that the receiver does not have an opportunity of an easy kill. It must also be placed so as to allow the server an advantage for his next return, admitting the receiver puts the ball in play.

Just as the first law of receiving is to, put the ball in play, so of service it is to cause the receiver to fall into error. Do not strive unduly for clean aces, but use your service to upset the ground strokes of your opponent.

Service should be hit from as high a point as the server can COMFORTABLY reach. To stretch unnecessarily is both wearing on the server and unproductive of results. Varied pace and varied  speed is the keynote to a good service.

The slice service should be hit from a point above the right shoulder and as high as possible. The server should stand at about a forty-five degree angle to the baseline, with both feet firmly planted on the ground. Drop the weight back on the right foot and swing the racquet freely and easily behind the back. Toss the ball high enough into the air to ensure it passing through the desired hitting plane, and then start a slow shift of the weight forward, at the same time increasing the power of the swing forward as the racquet commences its upward flight to the ball. Just as the ball meets the racquet face the weight should be thrown forward and the full power of the swing smashed into the service. Let the ball strike the racquet INSIDE the face of the strings, with the racquet travelling directly towards the court. The angle of the racquet face will impart the twist necessary to bring the ball in court. The wrist should be somewhat flexible in service. If necessary lift the right foot and swing the whole body forward with the arm. Twist slightly to the right, using the left foot as a pivot. The general line of the racquet swing is from RIGHT to LEFT and always forward.

At this point and before I take up the other branches of serving, let me put in a warning against footfaulting. I can only say that a footfault is crossing or touching the line with either foot before the ball is delivered, or it is a jump or step. I am not going into a technical discussion of footfaults. It is unnecessary, and by placing your feet firmly before the service there is no need to footfault.

It is just as unfair to deliberately footfault as to miscall a ball, and it is wholly unnecessary. The average footfault is due to carelessness, over-anxiety, or ignorance of the rule. All players are offenders at times, but it can quickly be broken up.

Preview : Basketball Portraits

Filed under: Uncategorized — tomleuntjensphotography @ 11:48 am

About 6 months ago on a family reunion I kind of launched the idea that I'd take pictures of Sven's basketball team. Yesterday me & my interim assistant Nico hit the road.

Last minute notice: 2 teams, 20 players, 2 hours, portrait & team photos please...

And I didn't want any of these kind of shots either ... so the heat was ON!

Earlier this week David hobby over at strobist posted a very cool link to an article by Dustin Snipes: "70 basketball portraits in in two days". I already had a similar lighting scheme in mind but some of the posing tips came in very handy. (I'm terrible with guiding models). So a big thanks to guys like David & Dustin for sharing with the community, I don't think I would have been able to pull this off without guys like them.

I still have to go through all the pictures but, this one was a natural first pick.

Basketball Portraits - Preview

View On Black

Next week I'll be doing a tech post about the location, lighting for the portraits (for those who can't wait) and lighting for the team pictures.

I always appreciate some good constructive feedback! So lets hear it.

“Voglio campionato e coppa”

Filed under: Uncategorized — inmporta @ 11:45 am

Filed under: Uncategorized — indieandre @ 11:39 am

Fino a ieri sera.

Sudo freddo solo a pensarci...

Molto male. Ma male male male.

Speriamo... In ogni caso sciarpa e bandiera fin nella culla.

Assault On Culpepper

Filed under: Uncategorized — Signal to Noise @ 11:32 am

I work with a sizeable number of people who are fans of long-sufferingly bad NFL teams. Given that I am in central-to-Southern California, they are mostly 49ers fans, but there are other fans of the downtrodden -- particularly some Bears fans, who are dying for something not Kyle Orton or Rex Grossman behind center. Seriously, looking at the starting quarterbacks for several teams in this league right now, it's mystifying to me as to why Daunte Culpepper couldn't land a half-decent shot at nabbing a starting gig for Atlanta, San Francisco, Chicago, Baltimore, or any number of teams without waiting for a QB to get hurt. Now, he's decided to retire at the age of 31.

Much of this is probably due to Culpepper acting as his own agent, and the blame could go both ways -- he turned down offers that didn't have roster guarantees or pay what he thought he was worth, and in the NFL, they will chronically underpay you until they have to pony up -- but that willingness to take his own career into his hands and deal directly with management probably did not sit well with some of the entrenched power brokers among the NFL elite.

Chicago is notorious for being cheap about QBs, and I wouldn't suggest going back to Oakland, Miami, or Minnesota -- it's hard to go back some place after you've been shipped out.  Atlanta and Baltimore are both starting rookies, Buffalo is putting its faith in the second year of Trent Edwards, Arizona has gone back to Kurt Warner after Matt Leinart has looked like crap once again.

So why did the only offers come from Green Bay and Pittsburgh? If his knee did turn out to be completely healthy, he would be a vast improvement over about half the QBs in the league (particularly in San Francisco). I am hesitant to bring up the collusion bit at times, but the guy cannot be that much of a jerk or ego enough to get all teams to not seriously consider him.
