Abbeyfeale Vocational School won the Co. Limerick VEC U14 County Championship on Thursday last by the narrowest of margins when they defeated Hazelwood College of Dromcollogher. The match was played in ideal conditions in Dromcollogher.
Hazelwood College got to the better start and were 1-2 to no score after ten minutes. Matthew Broderick opened the scoring for Abbeyfeale with a well taken point This was followed by two points from team captain Adam Barry but Hazelwood struck back with another goal and a point leaving Abbeyfeale 2-3 to 0-3 in arrears.
The fact that several of the players had been involved in club games the previous evening was taking its toll. Hazelwood stretched their lead to seven points with another point. This triggered an Abbeyfeale fightback, a goal and a point from Shane Murphy, a goal from Matthew Broderick and another goal from Connor Kiely put Abbeyfeale in a one point lead at half-time, 3-4 to 2-6.
Abbeyfeale started strongly in the second half , two quick points from Adam Barry and another from Connor Kiely opened a three point gap. Hazelwood, however were not about to lie down and we had a nail-biting finish with Abbeyfeale winning out by just one point in the end.
A number of members of this squad are also in action this week as they play a Munster Final against Cahir Community College in the First Years "under fourteen" competition. This match takes place in Charleville.
